Mishawaka's Riverwalk is viewed as an Urban Necklace whose jewels are its Parks. Central Park, on the north-east portion of the Riverwalk, is adjacent to the downtown area and has become a primary trailhead for the Riverwalk. With this new visibility, better utilization of the park spaces was desired.
To accomplish this a softball diamond and three tennis courts were removed and relocated to other park facilities. A new open lawn green and perimeter walkways from Mishawaka Avenue to the Riverwalk have been established. The walkway system provides overlooks and seating areas. New shelters for rentals and community functions are available along with restrooms that serve the park and Riverwalk users. Amenities also include new signage and wayfinding, new play structures, and a centralized splashpad.
The park campus, compatible with adjacent development and with unique play structures and venues of activity for all ages, makes Central Park a community destination and a true jewel.
